Early warning of heart failure using micro-systems

Multiple micro sensors will be used in the future to help monitor body parameters. Monitoring of body health indicators will be a useful tool in indicating ill health at an early stage.

The MICROCARD project aims to provide the medical community with new micro-systems that will provide innovative methods of reliable patient monitoring. These micro-systems will enable continuous evaluation of illnesses and the effects of prescribed medication. The product consists of a thin multisensor silicon needle which is used to simultaneously measure several parameters associated with the heart condition known as myocardial ischaemia.

The demonstration uses an experimental model of the multiple sensor micro-system applied to monitoring human body parameters during heart surgery. The MicroCard system will be used for early detection of myocardial ischaemia when the heart is artificially arrested during surgery.
